Within the town of Steamboat Springs, there are options to rent both single and multi passenger ATV/off roading vehicles. By taking advantage of these options, visitors can explore the beautiful backcountry that may have otherwise been left unexplored.
Where To Go
There are many different options available for travelers looking to take advantage of the many off roading options the area has to offer.
Buffalo Pass
For example, Buffalo Pass is a popular option for travelers looking to gain access to numerous backcountry Forest Service campgrounds and fishing lakes. ATV’s are allowed east of the starting point on Forest Service Road 60 and all other marked forest roads. Many colorful seasonal wildflowers are also viewable throughout much of the route. Buffalo Pass is 15.4 total miles and is approximately an hour drive.
Elkhorn Mountain
Another popular route is the Elkhorn Mountain trail. This trail follows a portion of an old cattle trail named the Stock Driveway. It offers views of historic mining equipment and cabin ruins near Elkhorn Mine while climbing in elevation towards the peak of Elkhorn Mountain. This trail, at 10.4 total miles, is best suited for aggressive, high clearance 4WD SUVs and ATV’s.
